What can you expect when meeting Callum for a psychiatric assessment?
Callum uses a combination of approaches to the assessment and development of treatment plans with those who seek his support. During an initial assessment with him, you can expect a non-judgemental and confidential discussion (“history taking”) about the reason that a psychiatric assessment has been felt to be needed. The meeting will explore current problems and difficulties related to mental health and other areas, and is likely to touch on family history, childhood and development, education, employment, relationships and previous episodes of mental and physical health problems. As a medical doctor trained in psychiatry, Callum brings the whole body and mind perspective including the interaction between physical and mental health, ensuring that overall wellbeing is addressed and not only those that are psychological.
By the end of an assessment, Callum aims to develop a shared understanding of the problem, which may include a diagnosis, or a number of possible differential diagnoses that may require further tests or assessments. It is aimed that a treatment plan can be formulated with you at this stage, although may occur in the context of additional information in particularly complex issues.
A treatment plan is likely to include one or more combinations of pharmacological, psychological and/or physical approaches. Callum has extensive experience in pharmacological approaches to the treatment of mental health problems, including innovative medication use where other approaches have been unsuccessful. He is well versed in the benefits and effectiveness of psychological approaches (“talking therapies”) and has specifically undertaken specialist additional training in and is an accredited therapist for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), a NICE-approved treatment for trauma condition. Developing an evidence-based and effective, realistic treatment plan is a skill which includes understanding what should be provided by whom and when, of which he has extensive experience and knowledge and will use this to advise you about your mental health.
Callum has undertaken training in the assessment and treatment of neurodiverse presentations such as Autism, ADHD and AuDHD, including with the UK Adult ADHD Network (UKAAN), the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD (DIVA) and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule -2 (ADOS-2), using these and other approaches in making these diagnoses where appropriate, and guiding treatment. He is also trained and able to use a range of psychometric assessment tools to provide additional quantitative perspective to clinical assessments.
An important area of Callum’s experience arises from a longstanding focus on working with young adults engaged in the criminal justice system, often with very long sentences to serve, and many with autism. He advocates strongly for the equivalence of care for all, and this is reflected in the positive outcomes for the many young men whose care and treatment for which he has been responsible over the last 20 years. His interest in this core area of forensic mental health has led to him working to assist the Government in their response to the Justice Committee’s report on Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP).
Charitable, Education, and Medicolegal Activities
Callum is a trustee at Together for Mental Wellbeing (“Together UK ”https://www.together-uk.org/ ) which is the UK’s oldest community mental health charity formed in 1879 whose objective is to promote the right and ability for people who experience mental distress have to lead independent, fulfilling lives as part of their communities, a cause which has been central to his career as a psychiatrist and advocate for those with mental health problems. As a trustee, he is responsible for ensuring that the executive board and organisation more broadly fulfil their charitable objectives and progress these values.
Callum has played a central role in the training of doctors across the UK over the last 20 years through his work in a national specialist service at Broadmoor. His expertise and reputation is reflected in his frequent invitation to speak at national and international conferences, panel discussions and contribute to government consultations through the various charities in which he is involved. He has had numerous peer reviewed articles published in academic journals, and places particular emphasis on the articles he has written on autism.
Callum is an established expert witness providing evidence to the justice system in a range of different areas where medicine and the law interface. He has been centrally involved in cases of a highly sensitive nature, including those involving terrorism, national security, homicide and mental disorder, and has given evidence in the Central Criminal Court (The Old Bailey), and the High Court (Court of Appeal). He is frequently instructed in some of the most complex cases in the UK, and has provided consultation to secure settings with regards to improving standards for mental healthcare. He also practices medicolegally in Jersey, Channel Islands.
And Finally…
Callum is married and has two children, each with their own particular challenges to face, and his learned experience as a parent has further informed his ethos and approach as a psychiatrist. Whenever they are not keeping him busy, he cooks, conducts rigorous research into coffee-related gadgets, cycles, and plants things in his garden whilst quietly urging them to grow.

Chris Lambourne
MBA, LLB(Hons), DFP Juridique B2
I was raised in the Middle East until the age of 14 when I moved to the UK, an experience that shaped my identity as a global citizen. I originally studied Law in both France and the UK but quickly decided it wasn’t for me. I joined the civil service graduate scheme and got my first job in the Organised Crime Policy Unit working on EU Policy on Human Trafficking & Money Laundering. However, with my mother a psychiatrist & GP and my father an epidemiologist, it perhaps wasn’t surprising that I found myself drawn to healthcare albeit by a slightly indirect route – via brief stint leading the launch of Guinness Smooth in Cameroon.
Since that time, I have spent almost twenty years working across primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare including Broadmoor Hospital, Guys & St Thomas’ Hospital, the Department of Health and Turning Point (Substance Use). My areas of particular interest are Substance Use Pathways, Process Redesign and Continuous Improvement Methodologies. Some of my most memorable roles include Director of Population Health Management in South East London, and CQC Quality Programme Director at South West London and St Georges Mental Health Trust.
Outside of HumanMind Health, I am a Non-Executive Director of Thera Trust, which supports people with learning disabilities to live as independently as possible, and a former Trustee of the RSPCA. I live with my partner and 5 rescue cats and dabble in my passions for textiles and craft.

I’m a Change and Transformation Professional with experience across central government, healthcare and financial services, helping organisations improve the way they work through smarter processes, data-driven decision-making and practical, people-focused change. I enjoy finding simple solutions to complex problems and working with everyone from frontline teams to senior leaders to turn ideas into meaningful improvements.
Before moving into transformation, I spent more than 10 years in luxury hospitality, building my career with renowned brands including The Langham Sydney and the Bulgari Hotel London. Those years taught me the importance of exceptional service, strong relationships and attention to detail—skills that continue to shape the way I work today.
Originally from Italy, I spent several years living and working in Sydney and Hobart before moving to the UK in 2011. Living and working in different countries has given me a broad perspective and an appreciation for different cultures, people and ways of thinking.
What I enjoy most is working with people to make change feel achievable rather than overwhelming. Whether I’m improving a service, streamlining a process or supporting a team through transformation, I believe the best outcomes come from listening, collaborating and keeping people at the centre of every decision.
Outside of work, I’m a passionate foodie who loves cooking, sharing meals with family and friends, and discovering new places and flavours. I’m also a Level 2 Certified Mental Health First Aider, reflecting my belief that supporting people’s wellbeing is just as important as delivering great results.

Outside the clinic, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two boys, wider family and friends. One of my greatest pastimes is climbing mountains with our Labradors in Ireland and West Wales, and walking where we live in the Surrey Hills. I also love to sing and perform with the wonderful ‘Off The Scale’ choir in Guildford.
